After working through this lesson, you will be able to:

In Lecture Format

  1. List the organs of the female reproductive system and briefly describe the function of each.
  2. Describe the histological organization of the:
    1. ovaries
    2. uterine tubes
    3. uterus (uterine horns)
    4. vagina
  3. Describe the processes of:
    1. oogenesis
    2. follicle development in the ovary
    3. ovulation and formation of corpus luteum
  4. Describe the cyclic changes in the female reproductive tract:
    1. changes in the ovaries
    2. changes in the endometrium of the uterus
    3. changes in levels of estrogen and progesterone

In Lab Format

  1. Identify histologic sections of the ovary, uterine tubes, uterus, vagina.
  2. Identify the following structures/cells in the ovary:
    1. cortex
    2. medulla
    3. primordial follicle
    4. primary follicle
    5. secondary follicle
    6. secondary (vesicular) follicle
    7. oocyte
    8. zona pellucida
    9. granulosa cells
    10. theca cells
    11. interstitial gland cells
    12. granulosa lutein cells
  3. Classify the epithelium in the uterine tubes, uterus, and vagina.
  4. Classify the connective tissue in all parts of the female reproductive tract.
