Case 2 (a)

This is a slide of a pig, but it could be a lamb or a puppy or a foal or a calf or a cat. The needle is near where the action is.

• What do you see?
• Can you speculate on why this animal is dead?
• What other lesions might have been seen in this 12 day old pig?

You should see poorly involuted umbilical structures (arteries,vein, urachus). These are often the result of umbilical infections at birth. Thus, animals may acquire, in addition to the local omphalitis, a bacteremia and disseminated infection.
